I went to the dentist earlier this month, and when they ask you, "how's your teeth, any changes?" I just kind of mentioned that I was having some all over sensitivity to cold. Nothing specific, not any tooth in particular, just sort of ALL of them in general. Truth be told, I knew I had been clenching my jaw at night, and that was not good. In fact, the muscles in my shoulders, neck, and face were all so tense that it was giving me headaches. I'm not a grinder, thank God, but I definitely was clenching my teeth in my sleep. And she asked about it, and I admitted it, and she said that definitely puts stress on the teeth and gums and will make them more sensitive. And she recommended trying an over the counter night guard and stuff. Yadda yadda. And then she mentioned maybe taking a magnesium supplement like Natural Calm would help, and gestured over to the corner where there was a little display, and said that most people are pretty deficient in magnesium and don't know it. It helps to relax muscles. This woman (the hygenist) is a certified holistic health practitioner (CHHP) who is always talking about artificial additives and the influence of toxins, etc........ I took it with a grain of salt and didn't mind much. (not that there's anything wrong with that, in fact I admire it, but I just never know when somebody is trying to sell me something, know what I mean?)
Still, kind of like that time I watched that PBS documentary "The Blood Sugar Solution" and decided to wholeheartedly embrace the no high fructose corn syrup lifestyle (which we still maintain today after all this time -GO US), something about this triggered my curiosity and I looked into it. Started googling things like magnesium deficiency, supplements, etc.
OH MY GOD.
I found out I am basically the freaking POSTER CHILD for magnesium deficiency. And you know what, most people really are lacking in it. I've learned so much about how magnesium is required to complete hundreds of chemical reactions in the body, how many ailments and discomforts can be alliviated with a simple supplement, and so much more. The modern diet is full of refined flour, meat, and dairy-- NONE of which contain any magesium. I checked my One a Day Women's Formula multivitamin, and guess what? Magnesium was at a paltry 13%.
So yeah, I went on Amazon and bought a bottle of Natural Calm (which has over 500 raving reviews) and I've been taking it daily. And it feels amazing. I am so much more relaxed, in body and mind, although a pleasant relaxation sensation is only one of the side effects, my mind feels clearer, I sleep better, and I just feel overall like everything is working better. I crave it now. Can't wait until my next dose. I just mix it in a glass of water and chug it down, it has a lemon flavor. Not bad.
Not to sound like a crazy person, but I strongly recommend that all my friends and family read these couple of articles describing the benefits of magnesium and see if it sounds good to you. I'm actually baffled that this is not more common knowledge, like . I wish I had known about this sooner, and I'm definitely going to get the Natural Calm Kids for Drew and Parker. I really think Drew in particular would benefit from it.
I've been taking it for almost 2 weeks now, and I truly love it and crave it. No more clenching my teeth at night. My shoulders are way less tight. I might not be at my ideal doseage yet, still experimenting, but wow, what a difference.
