We bought a new car! This has been a long time coming for us, and I'm sooooo glad it's finally here. We knew that we needed a new vehicle since our fleet has been quickly aging...my 1996 Mazda and the 2001 Corolla are showing some wear & tear. I had a good run with the 12 yr old Mazda, and I bear her no grudges despite all the 180 and 360 degree spin-outs she took me for on wintry mornings (she's a Carolina girl like me, not cut out for such utter nonsense like this). I saw my life flash before my eyes not a FEW times and last winter when I was pregnant and found myself spinning around on the icy roads I knew the end was near. A 4X4 vehicle was in desperate need. People at work always cluck-clucked at me for not having "snow tires" and they were probably right but I guess I (and unborn Drew) survived.
Then Drew came along and brought everything to a fever pitch since the car seat situation became GRIM when we have to wrench our backs to practically throw him in the backseat, and not crack his skull on the door frame. Bend down LOW, twist FAR over, rotate and twist the baby--watch his head!--and unceremoniously dump him into his seat and gingerly crawl back out...... Oh my God. Not easy for a 5'10" girl to do in a Corolla after a c-section.
So anyway, the list of things we NEEDED and WANTED were a mile long and pretty much included everything that a 12-yr old sedan did not have. Height! Traction! Four wheel drive! Leg room! Safety features! LATCH hooks! The 2008 Toyota Rav4 is packed with airbags that I did not know even existed and it's like that Snapple commercial when the whole world is wrapped in Bubble wrap. Sweet. And a CD player???? I have never had a CD player in a car before so I'm giddy about that (is Drew too young for Marilyn Manson?? :). But forget the CDs... it even has a plug for a mp3 player so that's even more convenient. And the temperature gauge!!! Woooo! I love to know the temperature. This is awesome. TEN cup holders--how thirsty do you have to be??
Personally I'm excited to be able to drive around without my knees hitting the steering column, I mean that's cool, right?? I've been crammed up like a sardine in the Corolla for so long that I can't even imagine being comfortable in a car!!! Even when I'm in the passenger seat, if I wanted to open the glove box it whacks my knees...
Anyway, forgive my excessive enthusiasm. I know I sound like country come to town. All this new-fangled stuff just boggles my mind. What great new things they have in cars now! I'm gonna be washing and scrubbing this thing all summer long (taking away from my gardening time) and Armor-alling the insides of it. Heh.
