So yesterday I was making Dave's favorite..... a Peruvian quinoa pork stew. I got to the part where you add 5 cups of chickenn broth, so I had 3 14oz cans of Swanson's chicken broth (33% reduced sodium), and I popped them open and added 1 can, then the 2nd, and then the 3rd. UGH! Mid-stream in pouring out the 3rd I realized it was a BAD color. It was kind of a blue-ish/black. And it immediately SMELLED. Like death and ass.
So I stopped pouring, and immediately realized that I had just ruined my entire stew and it would ALL have to be thrown out. Gross. I poured the rest of the offensive can into the sink and clearly observed how gross in color and smell it was. It was not expired. The date on the bottom of the can is October 2011.
I fished around in my stew and found a lumpy, slimy gross "mass" of some kind. it looked a lot like a steamed clam to me. ICK.
So I have a few options here. First, is that I have learned to NEVER pour anything into something I am cooking that I have not visually inspected myself. Next time I will pour any kind of broth into a glass container so I can look at it before I put it into the stew I had been working on.
And secondly, I have saved the Can o' Nastiness so I can call Swanson's and complain. If I get around to it. I know I SHOULD and I know I'll probably get some free coupons or something, but like Dave said, "it takes a lot of time and effort to file a complaint." So yeah. I didn't take pictures or anything, because I was pretty grossed out and I just didn't have the time at the moment, after having trashed my entire kitchen with all the ingredients pulled out to go in the stew that we couldn't even eat.
I did a quick Google search on "mold in swanson's broth" and found a whole slew of things, that people find in their soups and other canned ingredients. Apparently it is not all that uncommon. Even on Facebook a while back there was a viral thing going around about a huge moldy mass found in a Capri Sun. So, it happens. And I know I should complain but some of the search results I found remarked about how they had to wait on hold for a long time just to talk to someone, and coupons were slow in forthcoming.
So I dunno....... if I get around to calling, I'll let you know. In the meantime, consider yourself warned! Even ingredients from trusted brands can be funky sometimes. :/
