It's hunting season again, as of Sept 15th. Archery... for deer and wild turkeys among a few other things. It's a sad time of year for me because of where I live. I see these turkeys hanging out in our yard all year long, we see their babies come through as ratty little tiny things, and then young smaller versions, and see them grow up and survive the most awful winters. They eat from our birdfeeders and walk around on our patio. It's a very fun thing, and neat for us to watch. But now they're up for grabs for hunters. During the fall season, hunters are allowed to take one bird of either sex per season. Interestingly, it is unlawful to take a turkey with a rifle, dogs, electronic calling devices, live decoys, or while it is perched in a tree. If using a bow, it must be at least a 40-pound-pull bow.I love to be up to date on the NH hunting laws since so much of it goes on near my house, and I like to know what these guys are up to.
Just Thursday evening we watched a bow hunter drag a dead deer out of the woods and load it into his pickup truck and take it away.... this same guy we see every year who parks in our cul-de-sac. I'm not opposed to legal hunting, but it does make me sad. Nature is cruel.
We've been having fun with owls lately..... when it gets dark the woods just come to life with a symphony of different kinds of hooting owls. So I did some looking on the web and found a list of owls that live in NH, and then found another website that has owl calls of each species, and figured out which ones we've been hearing! I was able to identify the Barred Owl and the Short Eared Owl (male and female). Very cool.
Here is a video that Dave made last night around 12:30am by sticking the camera in the window.... so you can hear what it's like. These are Short Eared Owls, I think. The hoothoothoot is the male and the high pitched long sound that goes higher at the end is the female. Note: it's kind of quiet in the beginning but just keep listening.
Download MVI_7313.AVI (when you click on it give it a minute or two to download. Turn up your volume so you can hear it. If you have dial up (i.e. MOM) DO NOT CLICK ON THIS. It will take you 30 minutes to download it on dial up. Ugh.)
So this evening for no particular reason other than because they were there, I went on a toadstood expedition in my backyard/woods. With all the rainy weather we've had in the past week they were everywhere!
I haven't posted in a few days because I haven't had anything to talk about. And I STILL don't, but I did take this picture today and found a little surprise afterwards when I downloaded it! I didn't even see my little snakey friend, but there he is. Click on the picture for a bigger view. I welcome these guys because they are great little garden helpers. Too bad I end up running over them with the lawn mower sometimes by accident.
That's the new azalea bush I planted on Saturday. That was what the photo was supposed to be of. :)
the famous turkey naturalist, Dave! Here we have 2 adult male wild turkeys who were fighting in our backyard for about an hour this morning. Dave kept calling me at work and giving me blow-by-blow reports. Awesome photos by Dave!
They were so busy fighting that he was able to walk right up to them. He tried to break it up, but they ignored him.
And here we go again on this rollercoaster of weather we're having.... today: 50 degrees, super rainy and windy, and all the snow melted again. :) I'm LIKING this. Yesterday my car was white from the salt, and today's drive home from work was basically like a 6-mile long car wash. Enough to get the crust off, anyway.
I would like to profess my love in a public venue for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I've had these things for awhile now, and every time I use them I am in complete and utter amazement. I think it should win some kind of an award for Modern Household Convenience.
Saw this on a 2Ps message board today... not sure what I think of this? Yeah that would be CEREAL. I'm mostly pretty disappointed. But whatever. Johnny Depp being on a box of cereal is better than Johnny Depp NOT being on a box of cereal.
The soup turned out edible. Palatable, even.... Maybe needs a little shredded parm sprinkled on top?
I would like to point out that the Hot Pocket Sausage Egg & Cheese has only 260mg of sodium!! YEAH! That makes it okay for breakfast. :)
Oh--I do have some sad news. Dave went into the woods behind our house and found one of the turkey bretheran pretty much in pieces, what was left of him... scattered all over the place. Yeah, not a pretty sight. Neither was all the blood in the snow. Coyote did it, as evidenced by the big dog paw prints all over the place. <sigh> Nature is cruel.
