We had the absolute pleasure of hiring Amanda Champagne to make Parker's birthday cake, and it was so fabulous beyond words or expectations. Amanda is sister to my friend and former coworker Heather from United Healthcare, and when I asked on Facebook who makes a good cake around here, I got a couple of responses that Amanda does amazing cakes..... and they were so right. I could tell from her cake photos on facebook that she is seriously creative and talented, so I wanted her to have free reign with the cake. I just told her I wanted it to be owl-themed and she could come up with whatever she liked.
And look at it!! It is SO creative and perfectly executed. The details are amazing. I loooove the little mushrooms and bees and tiny little acorns..... all made out of modeling chocolate, perhaps?? I feel so bad because I know for a fact she spent many hours on this cake. But it is truly beautiful and awesome. That bark around the tree stump? It's actual chocolate. Not fondant, but chocolate. I don't know HOW she did that. Every feather on the owl is individually hand scored.
The only thing that concerns me is this: if Parker had a cake like this for his FIRST birthday, how in the world will we ever top it for future birthdays? :) And what about Drew? His birthday is in six weeks, so maybe I'll have to ask Amanda to do his too. Woohoo!
